This is what I want to say to the very non-gentlemen who harassed me while I was enjoying the weather and a run. I saw it coming and stayed out of their way, but on the next block they whistled and clicked their tongues and caught up to me, asking for “a lighter” and I couldn’t believe they were possibly talking to me because, duh, I had nothing with me and I was running and I’ve never been a smoker. Then, came DAMNYOULOOKSOGOOD and I stopped and turned, tired and furious and prepared to dissolve the bullshit they were slinging.

No one likes that! No one! Women, ladies, girls don’t like that! I don’t like that! I do look good and keep how you think of me to yourself!

Typically, expectedly, they said it was their business to judge my appearance because I was right in front of them.

I don’t care what you think. I don’t want to hear it unless you are my friend or lover and I’ve asked your opinion. I don’t know you and I don’t want to! You’re making me uncomfortable and you need to stop.

While this confrontation left me feeling off balance, I don’t feel victimized. I feel proud that I used confrontation as a tool to meet discrimination with peace, boundaries and information. I won’t stop running or going outside by myself or wearing what I feel comfortable in or not wearing a bra or loving my body and my self. But I will protect myself. I will trust my instincts. I will be aware of my surroundings and the energy of other people. I will fight with love and not violence.
